“More is more” is this garden’s theme, as every inch of the front yard is filled with plants, pots, and pathways – accented by several fountains. Originally from South Korea, this homeowner honed his gardening skills working on the Samsung office landscape in England. Now retired, his yard has become his passion – and he always has plans for more! Watch your step for level changes as you explore these front and back yards of abundance. Meet these experienced gardeners who are passionate about helping you achieve the garden of your dreams.

A Crystal Falls developer carved a 3-acre building site from a tall hillside adjacent to a swimming pool and putting green, leaving a challenging rocky slope for the homeowner to tackle. A retaining wall provides initial runoff protection, while several horizontal paths zig-zag the hillside. The upper edge of each path is banked with soil and planted, capturing rain in true Permaculture style. Lush with trees and vibrant plantings—most of which are native—the garden comes alive with texture and color, centered around a creative water feature. Along the hillside, cascades of flowers not only delight the eye but also spark the inspiration behind many of her paintings.

A ten-foot-wide xeriscaped swath welcomes you to the front yard, where a stretch of lawn leads to mature foundation plantings brightened with fresh pops of color. As you arrive, try to imagine the backyard that once held only oak and cedar trees. True do-it-yourselfers, the homeowners transformed the space with a dry creek and meandering pathways that make their half-acre property feel much larger. Over just eight years—and all the while persevering through the rocky soil—they created a thriving oasis of plants, highlighted by a designated pollinator garden. Today, their grandchildren delight in exploring what feels like their very own wild park.

As you arrive, you will be welcomed by established, traditional front yard beds, which include delightfully blooming Mexican Oregano. Proceeding to the back yard, you’ll be surprised at its double depth which offered the homeowner opportunity to fill it with a carefully chosen variety of shade, flowering and fruiting trees, perennials, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and an arbor honoring her husband. Both sun and shade areas feature natives offering seasonal colors, pleasant aromas, and blooms for pollinators. Multiple seating areas encourage you to rest and observe details and an elevated stone patio provides an expansive overview.

Determined to minimize turf, this homeowner established foundation and perimeter beds before hiring a professional landscape designer to continue her vision. Wide side yards provide ample space for primarily native trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials; designated areas honor Barbara’s brother and husband. Passersby often pause to enjoy the view and take pictures. Most of the backyard turf was removed to add vignettes with more color, multiple seating areas and a potting shed. Daily the homeowner is nurtured emotionally by the surrounding beauty shared with bees, butterflies and her favorite hummingbirds.
